Student Journey – Carolyn Cook

Hello there! My name is Carolyn Cook.

Yoga has changed my life…along with the corresponding meditation. It has opened up a whole world of movement and music and spirituality. I wish I had started years ago.

I was born in the Pennine District of Yorkshire in England…so I have always felt comfortable in a hills environment. I have been married for 44 years and have two grown-up children and three grandchildren.

It was three years ago now that I started yoga with Deb and what a great decision it was!

I was having a difficult time with some health problems which brought on crippling anxiety. I knew I had to change things and was advised to join a yoga class and to take up my old interest in drawing and painting.

Instead of just being a wife and mother I was to become ‘me’ again.

Searching for a yoga class I came upon Deb’s Beginners class.
She looked ok :)….not a yoga teacher that you see in adverts with fancy lycra…but a normal girl. So I booked into a Beginners class.

Arriving for my first lesson was a little daunting. What would the others be like? Would I be the oldest? Would I feel silly? They all turned out to be ‘normal’ like me. In fact one girl in the class has now become a good friend.

I loved yoga from that first lesson…even though for many weeks I was hiding the anxiety that had drawn me there…..and I have continued to love it more and more. It has given me so much…a more supple body…. friendship and fun….relaxation….and a feeling of group warmth and spirituality during class.

I believe that yoga finds you when you need it (and I certainly did). Throughout the three years, I have found my own yoga sweet spot…and for me, that is the slower gentle yoga and yin yoga. I call it a moving meditation…just blissful.

I also love Yoga Nidra and have been to a few fabulous workshops that have been based around that beautiful meditative practice…along with Sound Healing workshops and Restorative classes…all beautiful and all adding to my deepening experience.

When Deb invited me to her inaugural Spirit of Yoga Retreat in Ubud/Bali last year there was a frisson of excitement in my tummy. I had never been on holiday alone but I had always thought how wonderful it would be to go on a retreat like this. I signed up!!!

The setting in Ubud was glorious.

Getting up at dawn for meditation was quite special. Yes, the actual getting out of bed so early was hard…but the silence, interrupted only by the sounds of the jungle was magical and moving for me. It was my favourite part of the retreat.

There wasn’t much sitting around after that…there was too much to do! Yoga in a beautiful setting of course…guided walks through the paddy fields, Indonesian cooking classes and of course evening meals with the other girls who were becoming great buddies and confidants.

The Spirit of Yoga Retreat challenged me to do things by myself and to learn that I could do things alone …and enjoy it.

By the time we were dancing wildly to the silent disco on the final morning, all our inhibitions had gone.

Yoga has changed my life…along with the corresponding meditation. It has opened up a whole world of movement and music and spirituality. I wish I had started years ago.
